Kritter #4 In 2022, the spruce trees experienced what is known as a mast year: they produced an unusually large amount of pollen – enough to cover the city with a yellow-green layer. I photographed this phenomenon at the Erlaufsee in Lower Austria. Mast years usually happen every few years and are caused by warm, dry summers and late frosts in the previous year.
